Department of Microbiology
Professor Dr. Mahmuda Yasmin is serving in the Department of Microbiology as a Professor. Her BSc (Hon’s) is in Botany (1983), and MSc (Thesis) in Microbiology (1984) from the University of Dhaka. She earned her PhD in 1997 on Molecular Virology from the Institute of Virology, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, UK. She received a one-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2005-2006) by UNU-KIRIN at the National Food Research Institute (NFRI), Tsukuba, Japan. She also visited the University of Heidelberg, Germany as a visiting Professor in 2009. Professor Yasmin has been serving in the Department for last 30 years. She served as the Chairman of the Department from 23-06-2012 to 21-06-2015.
Professor Yasmin is also involved in research in the field of Virology and Medical Microbiology. Her main research area includes epidemiology and genotyping of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C viruses (HBV, HCV), genotyping of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in cervical cancer cases, association of Epstein Barr virus (EBV) with Hodgkin and Non Hodgkin lymphoma, microRNA profiling of HBV and HCV. She also worked on molecular based detection of M. tuberculosis, mutational analysis of MDR- Mtb, detection and molecular characterization of E. coli O157:H7, and carbapenem resistant Non-fermenting bacteria from clinical samples. She received research funds from the ministry of Education Bangladesh, Ministry of Science and Technology, Bangladesh; University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Biotechnology Research Centre, DU.
To date Professor Yasmin supervised more than 40 MS students, one MPhil student, and 3 PhD students, and co-supervised two MPhil and three PhD students. She published more than 50 research articles in peer-reviewed national and international journals. She received Board scholarship, Dhaka University scholarship, and the Chancellor's award. She served as a general secretary of Bangladesh Society of Microbiologists (BSM), currently serving as the chief editor of Bangladesh Journal of Microbiology (BJM).Show less
