Khairul Chowdhury is a sociologist with a PhD in Social Anthropology and is currently Professor of Sociology at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dr. Chowdhury studied, worked, and carried out research at York University and Dalhousie University in Canada, and at the University of Dhaka, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, and Jagannath University in Bangladesh, receiving a number of academic awards and scholarships, including an IDRC Doctoral Award. He has published scholarly journal articles and book chapters with international academic publishers, including Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, and Brill. His work has critically examined ethnicity, nationalism, Indigenous peoples, forests, frontier regions, and state–society relations and social transformation in South Asia, particularly in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.
Dr. Chowdhury is particularly interested in frontier regions in South and Southeast Asia and their relations with colonial and postcolonial states, using marginal spaces, peoples, and ecologies to examine established narratives and theories of society and social change. His research has focused in particular on Indigenous peoples, forests, agrarian change, and the relationships among state, society, and ecology. His current work extends these concerns to sociological theory and theorizing from the Global South, sociology and knowledge production in Bangladesh and the Global South, and the social and ecological dimensions of climate change and adaptation.
Dr. Chowdhury teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka and East West University; supervises undergraduate and graduate students' research locally and internationally; and works as an independent researcher and professional consultant in the areas of forestry, conservation, and Indigenous peoples. He serves as a Regional Editor and Bangladesh Coordinator of the international sociological magazine Global Dialogue, published by the International Sociological Association (ISA), and as a reviewer for numerous national and international journals.
