Habiba Khatun, daughter of Mawlana Kabiruddin Rahmani and Faizun Nesa was born at Marsumabad Qazibari (Katrabo) within the jurisdiction of the medieval city of sonargaon. Her maternal grandfather Kazi Moulvi  Elahi Bux  descendant of the Qazi (jurist), Who settled at Katrabo with Masum Khan Kabuli. 



Dr Habiba Khatun was brought up in bongshal Dhaka. She received her education from Bangsal mosque and different institutions of Dhaka. She obtained Master of Arts (M.A) degree 1970 in Islamic History and Cuture with specialization in Islamic Art and archaeology and PhD in ‘History and Monuments of Sonargaon’ from the University of Dhaka. After her retirement from service Professor Dr. Habiba Khatun joined the same department as supernumerary Professor.



Throughout her career she taught Islamic painting, architecture, civilization, society and Culture of Bangladesh. She published more than 50 (fifty) research articles in various journals of home and abroad and 5 (five) books. She was the editor of “Itihas” a biannual journal of Bangladesh Itihas Parishad, for a long time and President of the Dhaka University Islamic History and Culture Alumni Association. 



She regularly contributes scholarly writings in various daily newspapers on different issues. She was the provost of Shamsun Nahar (residential) hall, Dhaka University. She is life member of various research organizations such as:

 

  • Bangla Academy 

  • Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (ASB) 

  • IFBPW (International Federation of Business and Professional Women)

  • ACSAA (American Council for Southern Asian Art, The University of Michigan) 

  • Bangladesh Itihaas Parishad etc.



Dr Habiba Khatun is a society concious and courageous lady she actively participated in different National movements and remarkables are language Movement in 1952 and Liberation war in 1971. 

In improving the Social awareness of the disadvantaged group of people she formed and conducted an informal School to provide basic education to children as well as women of Tejkunipara basti in Tejgaon, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Recently she is involved with various social work throughout different organizations in various capacities; established a women’s library at Narandi, Narsingdhi. She is proud mother of two daughter and doctor Nahid Jamal Rianon and Dr. Rafia Sultana Rashu and a son Engineer Shamsul Kabir saadi. Her husband Mr. Abdul Khaleque was a national and international award winner scientist of Bangladesh.
