ABSTRACT
The present study w as carried out to explore the relationship betw een T ype 2 D iabetes M ellitus (T 2D M ) and depression and to see the efficacy o f psychological m anagem ent, particularly, cognitive behavior therapy for depression in diabetic patients. It w as hypothesized that there is a relationship betw een T 2D M and depression and that psychological intervention is effective in reducing T 2D M and depression. Both the qualitative and quantitative research m ethods w ere used in the study. Purposively the sam ples w ere taken from outpatient departm ent (O PD ) o f B angladesh Institute o f H ealth Science (B IH S) B ashaboo, D haka and B angladesh Institute o f R esearch and R ehabilitation on D iabetes, E ndocrine and M etabolic D isorder (B IR D E M ), Shahbagh, D haka. The sam ple o f the study com prised 652 patients o f w hom 348 w ere m ales and 304 w ere fem ales. T h eir age range w as betw een 20-80 years and their average age w'as 51±11 years. T heir educational level w as from illiteracy to doctorate degree. D uration o f T 2D M o f the subjects w ere divided in three phases - less than 1 years (14.9% m ales and 17.2% fem ales), 1-10 years (17.6% m ales and 17.2% fem ales) and above 10 years (20.9% m ales and 12.3% fem ales). 51.2%) m ale subjects and 37.7% feir.ale subjects w ere m arried, 0.3% m ales, and 0.2% m ales & 0.5% fem ales w ere separated. In respect o f occupation 41.1% fem ale Ss w ere housew ives, 2.5% fem ale Ss w ere service holder, 0.5% fem ale Ss w ere business persons, 1.5% fem ales w ere retired and other fem ales 1.1% ; w'hereas ol m ale Ss 20.9% w ere jobholders, 14.3% w ere businessm en, 12.6% w ere retired persons and others w ere 5.7%. The m easures used in the study w ere: D epression Scale (U ddin & Rahm an, 2005), accu-check, in-depth interview , 11-point rating scale, assessm ent o f functioning level and observational reports. C ognitive behavior therapy w as applied to six selected subjects o f this study to see the effectiveness o f psychological m anagem ent in reducing the level o f depression and T2D M in them . B lood glucose level and level o f depression o f these patients w ere m easured before and after the application o f cognitive behavior therapy. Intervention session for these selected Ss varied from 8-16 to produce the desired results. F ollow up sessions for each o f the six patients o f the study took place after an interval o f 30 days. T he findings o f the study evinced that there w as significant im provem ent on controlling T 2D M and reducing depression level o f all the six selected patients w ho w'ere give psychological m anagem ent nam ely; cognitive behavior therapy. I'h u s, the results o f the study confirm ed the hypothesis that there is a relationship betw een T 2D M and depression and that psychological intervention is effective in reducing T 2D M and depression.
