The Department of Music is an important department in the Faculty of Arts, University of Dhaka.
The Department of Music has been trying to make a special impact to the development of cultural activities and environment of University of Dhaka. The music department has already occupied a special place in the cultural arena of Bangladesh. At present, the department is trying to establish its position in the international arena by organizing research seminars, International music festival and international symposiums by notable academics from all over the world.
Currently, the Department of Music offers a four-year B.A. (Honors) course and a one-year Master’s course. It also provides M.Phil and Ph.D Programmes. A four-year semester system of teaching and letter grade system of evaluation has been introduced at the B.A. Honors level from the Academic year 2006-2007.
Our faculty consist of active performers, composers and researchers in the classical music, Rabindra sangeet, Nazrul Sangeet, Folk Music and Instrumental Music. In addition, students get chance to stimulate their vision in professional ground with the courses like communication studies, aesthetics, music production and sound technology, composition and western music studies.
13 Faculty members along with 8 part time faculties in different field of music is toiling hard to meet out thirst to achieve our visions. They are also dedicated to teaching. Thus, our philosophy is grounded in performance, academic foundation and good technique.
We are offering Honors and masters in five discipline as Rabindra Sangeet (Music and literary works of Rabindranath Tagore), Nazrul Sangeet (Music and literary works of Kazi Nazrul Islam), Indian Classical Music, Folk Music and Instrumental Music (percussion-Tabla).
Department of Music started its individual journey since 2009 as it was previously known Department of Theatre and Music.
This very website of the department contains necessary notices, information of the activities, syllabus, publications etc I hope in future research and performance activities from both Teachers and students will enhance usability of this website.
