Being blighted by the plethora of disasters, hazards, and, issues of comprehensive aftermaths of global warming, adverse environment, and climatic variability, the quintessential urgency to launch a discipline aiming at addressing the holistic approaches of disaster management was a logical demand of time. With a view to imparting knowledge, skills and academic training, and being supported by the Comprehensive Disaster Management Program (CDMP) of the Government of Bangladesh, Center for Disaster and Vulnerability Studies started journey on September 2, 2009 at the University of Dhaka. Later, the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerabilities Studies was established on December, 15, 2011 upon the approval of the Syndicate of University of Dhaka. The institute holds a congenial academic environment for the students with digital classrooms, computer and GIS lab, enriched Library, different clubs for performing co-curricular activities. Through MoU between the MoDMR, GoB, and DU, the students of the institute are engaged in field level research since 2016 and significantly contributing to the national policy on disaster management. The faculties, students are representing at national and international levels meetings, seminar, symposium and workshop with high esteem. This institute also leading the Gender and Disaster Network, Bangladesh and GRRIPP network in South Asia.
