Dean of the Faculty

Welcome to the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Dhaka!

The Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences was founded in 2008. The faculty includes five departments, namely Department of Geography and Environment, Department of Geology, Department of Oceanography, Department of Disaster Science and Climate Resilience, and Department of Meteorology.

Bangladesh, being the most populated delta in the world, possesses unique natural resources and faces a range of environmental challenges. Our faculty plays a crucial role in understanding and addressing these issues of the country through achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, Vision 2041, and the Delta Plan 2100.

In the context of Bangladesh, our faculty specializes in various disciplines within Earth and Environmental Sciences, each holding its significance. Geoscientists from our faculty are actively engaged in the exploration and management of energy resources. Our research in water resources is dedicated to ensuring the sustainable management of groundwater, which plays a vital role in supporting the agriculture and industrial sectors. Additionally, we conduct studies to discover and develop mineral resources, aiming to meet the growing demands of the population. Our faculty conducts multidisciplinary research, focusing on understanding the ocean and coast, which aligns with the government's plans for the development of shipping, fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, offshore energy, biotechnology, marine genetic engineering, and submarine mining. These efforts contribute to the sustainable development and utilization of marine resources.

The faculty also places a strong emphasis on generating graduates who possess the ability to understand and mitigate the risks associated with natural and anthropogenic disasters. We conduct extensive research on climate change and its impacts on society and the environment, as this knowledge is crucial for achieving sustainable growth in Bangladesh. Being a deltaic country, Bangladesh faces various environmental challenges, including air and water pollution, noise pollution, and urban degradation. Graduates from our faculty are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to address these issues and make valuable contributions to the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems. Furthermore, our faculty focuses on the fields of weather forecasting and early warning, as well as population dynamics and migration. Weather forecasting plays a crucial role in predicting and analyzing weather patterns, severe weather events, and climate phenomena, enabling effective disaster preparedness. Our research on population dynamics and migration involves studying the patterns, trends, and impacts of population growth, migration, and urbanization, providing valuable insights for sustainable development planning and resource allocation in Bangladesh.

We are proud of our expert faculty members who possess extensive knowledge and expertise in their respective fields. Our faculty includes highly qualified individuals trained in renowned universities around the world. They cover a wide range of research areas and have made significant contributions to their fields of study.

The departments of our faculty are equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, allowing students and faculty members to conduct cutting-edge research in various fields of Earth and Environmental Sciences. These laboratories, complemented by modern classroom facilities and multimedia resources, provide an enriching educational experience.

We also value international collaboration, engaging in collaborative research projects with leading universities in countries, such as the USA, UK, Germany, Sweden, Japan, the Netherlands. These collaborations enhance our research capabilities and foster knowledge exchange on a global scale.

The faculty takes great pride in organizing various impactful events that contribute to the academic and research landscape. In 2020, we successfully organized ICEEST Dhaka 2020, a prestigious event that brought together experts and scholars in science, engineering, and technology to exchange ideas and explore the latest advancements in their fields. It provided a platform for fruitful discussions, networking, and collaborations. In 2022, we hosted a Career Festival and Research Fair, providing students and researchers with opportunities to showcase their talents, connect with potential employers, and gain valuable insights into various career paths. These events highlighted our commitment to fostering a vibrant academic environment and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.

As we continue to grow and face challenges, we recognize the need for increased research funding and opportunities for higher education, including funded Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Master of Science (MS) programs. Collaboration among government, industry, and academia can facilitate maximum resource utilization and ensure the practical application of our research in areas, such as resource development, disaster risk reduction, environmental protection.

In conclusion, the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Dhaka is committed to conducting impactful research and providing quality education in the field of Earth and Environmental Sciences. We aim to equip our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the complex challenges faced by Bangladesh and contribute to sustainable development.
