The Career Counselling Club of the Department of Information Science and Library Management (ISLMCCC) hosted a guest lecture titled “Studying at the University of Oxford: Myths, Realities, and Learning Experiences” on 11 January at 11:30 a.m. at the department premises. The session featured Dr. Mustak Ibn Ayub from the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka, as the guest speaker. Dr. Mustak completed his DPhil in Oncology at the University of Oxford.
Within the University of Dhaka community, there is a long-standing notion that “DU is the Oxford of the East.” Through this lecture, participants gained insights into how certain administrative structures, departmental practices, and student dormitory systems at the University of Dhaka align closely with those of the University of Oxford. In this sense, the comparison is not entirely mythical and does have a historical and structural basis. However, Dr. Mustak also highlighted that the quality of education and research at the University of Dhaka still lags that of Oxford University.
During his talk, Dr. Mustak elaborated on various aspects of studying at Oxford, including the admission process, funding and scholarship opportunities, cultural and co-curricular activities, summer schools, and student exchange programs. He also addressed funding opportunities available to students from underdeveloped and developing countries. The lecture concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, allowing students to clarify their queries and gain further insights.
The session commenced with welcome remarks from the Chairman of the Department, Dr. Md. Roknuzzaman, and the ISLMCCC Advisor, Dr. Md. Shiful Islam. The program was conducted by ISLMCCC Advisor Dr. Md. Anwarul Islam. At the end of the session, a token of appreciation was presented to the guest speaker by the faculty members. The event was attended by other faculty members of the department and approximately forty students.
