Ms. Farida Yasmin has been awarded the prestigious Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Award for the 2018-2019 year.
Ms. Farida Yasmin is serving as a lecturer at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka since February 2016 till date. She completed her BS and MS from the same department in the year 2013 and 2015, respectively. She is also involved in research in Plant Biotechnology Laboratory of this department. She has been admitted to fully funded Ph.D. program in the Department of Biological Sciences of University of North Carolina at Charlotte for August 2018 matriculation. Apart from that she has been awarded the prestigious Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Award for the year 2018-2019. The funding is maximum of $50,000 each academic year. This year out of 555 applicants received for the 2018-2019 academic year 50 new fellowships were granted and she is one of the 50 awardees of this prestigious fellowship worldwide. The research project she is going to work will lead to a scientific innovation for crop improvement. She will try to develop an improved soybean cultivar. This Ph.D. research will allow a paradigm shift in crop improvement and will be of tremendous mutual benefit for USA and Bangladesh. This research project fits very well with the prospect of Bangladeshi agricultural sector which is the core of our economy.
Upon completion of Ph.D. on such a novel research project she aspire to apply her expertise in policy making and implementing further projects in connection with government and non-government organizations. She also believes deciphering her knowledge to the students will help them to visualize the big picture. “The skills I will learn from the research project on crop improvement will help me to set up new projects in our university which will engage my students to resolve real world problems. 10 years from now I hope to create a network among researchers from life sciences where collaborative work will be done to propose solutions to the problems my nation is facing. Also, to build a nation it is an absolute necessity of women empowerment in every aspects,” Farida said.
