History of the Department

  • Home
  • History

Established in 1949, the Department of Geology at the University of Dhaka is one of the oldest and most prestigious Earth science departments in Bangladesh. For over seven decades, we have remained at the forefront of geoscientific education and research—committed to understanding Earth processes and addressing the evolving challenges of society, environment, and resource sustainability.

Our academic programs span undergraduate to doctoral levels, preparing students for impactful careers in energy, environment, hazard management, engineering geology, and research.

From the 2024–2025 academic session, we have introduced a semester-based system at the undergraduate level (B.S. Honours), aimed at improving learning continuity, course flexibility, timely evaluations, and alignment with global academic practices.

The department integrates classroom learning with intensive field-based training, hands-on laboratory instruction, and exposure to cutting-edge geospatial and geophysical tools. Students gain both theoretical depth and practical competence in subfields like sedimentology, structural geology, geophysics, hydrogeology, remote sensing, and environmental geology.

We are proud to host a range of modern research and teaching facilities, including:

  • A well-maintained Geology Museum (Shaheed Md. Abdul Muktadir Museum).
  • Multiple specialized laboratories such as Geoinformatics Lab, Geochemistry Lab, Hydrogeology & Groundwater Modeling Lab, GIS & Remote Sensing Lab, Engineering Geology Lab, and more.
  • A comprehensive seminar library offering access to essential books and references for coursework and research.

Our students are active in international professional chapters such as SEG, AAPG, EAGE, and SPE, and they enrich campus life through various clubs including the Women’s Club, Photography Club, and Cultural & Debate Forum. These platforms help them develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills beyond the classroom.

The department takes pride in its strong alumni network, which includes distinguished geoscientists, professors, policy experts, and industry leaders working across the globe. Their ongoing involvement and mentorship play a vital role in inspiring and guiding our current students.

With a dedicated faculty, rich academic heritage, dynamic curriculum, and supportive student culture, the Department of Geology remains committed to nurturing the next generation of Earth scientists and thinkers.
