4 researchers awarded Mirza Banu and Sirajul Islam Endowment Fund Award
Four researchers have been awarded “Mirza Banu and Sirajul Islam Endowment Fund Award” for their outstanding contributions to original research in history. Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman distributed the award among the researchers as the chief guest on May 14, 2018 at Sirajul Islam Lecture Hall of DU. DU History Department organized the event.
Chairman of the Department of History of DU Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Jamal presided over the program while Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof. Dr. Abu. Md. Delwar Hossain and donor of the Endowment Fund Prof. Dr. Sirajul Islam addressed it as special guests. Retired Professor of the Department of Islamic History & Culture of the University of Calcutta, India Dr. Sushil Chaudhury delivered Mirza Banu Memorial Lecture on “Bengal Textile Industry (17th -18th Century) : Alleged Poverty of the Weavers”. Prof. Dr. Asha Islam and Bindu Islam, daughters of Mirza Banu and Sirajul Islam also addressed the function.
Vice-Chancellor of DU Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman recalled the outstanding contributions of Dr. Sirajul Islam to develop education and research in the country. He congratulated the awardees as well as thanked the Eminent Historian Dr. Sushil Chaudhury for delivering memorial lecture. He hoped that the students and researchers would be highly benefited by this lecture.
The recipients of Mirza Banu and Sirajul Islam Endowment Fund Award are Major General Sarwar Hossain (Military Secretary to the President of Bangladesh), ASM Mohsin (Teacher of University of Asia Pacific), Ms. Suma Karmaker( Teacher of Bangladesh Open University) and Khadiza Khatun( (Teacher of Begum Badrunnesa Govt. Girls’ College).
It may be mentioned that former Professor of DU History Department Dr. Sirajul Islam worked as the Chairman of the Board of Editors of Banglapedia, the National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh and the Editor of the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh.
