The Master of International Trade and Business (MITB) program of the Department of International
Business, University of Dhaka has been launched as a direct response to the escalating demand for
skilled professionals in operating deals and transactions in international trade and business, in a
situation when globalization is becoming an increasingly important factor for the development of
Bangladesh. The country is doing fairly well in export-import trade and is experiencing an expanded
presence of international (including transnational and multinational) companies. This rigorous two-year
program combines in-depth study of the theories and practices of international trade and business and
emphasizes hands-on business problem solving. The program offers a high level of flexibility and a
wide range of elective courses that allow students to tailor the program to their specific career goals.
Immersed in the theoretical world of analysis of international trade and business and practical
interaction with the real business world, MITB graduates are expected to find and create value in the
market and enjoy a wide range of career options – from business houses and missions to the policy
making, and regulatory and administrative bodies involved in international trade and business.
The Departmental Professional Master’s Program is designed to cater the needs of professionals by
providing them relevant knowledge of international business and investment. Practical knowledge and
hands on experience are given to the students in this program to make them better informed about the
operations of business internationally.
Upon completion of the Professional Master’s Program, graduates will:
• understand the theoretical and practical aspects of international business issues.
• demonstrate professionalism, self-awareness, leadership, and effective communication skills
• demonstrate a global perspective and an awareness of how cultural differences impact

Syllabus
Sources of Information on Syllabus Design: A special committee is assigned to administer the EMBA
program of the Department. This committee is mainly responsible for the program syllabus development
which is then officially approved by the academic committee of the Department. The special committee
always keeps an eye on the demand of the market and program students. Time to time, based on the
consensus of the committee members, the syllabus of the program is changed.
Admission
Anyone who is willing to get admission into the MITB program must have bachelor degree, preferably
in business and minimum 2 years of work experience preferably in organizations dealing with
international trade and business and areas having relevance to them. After the announcement of
invitation for admission test dates, intending students apply in prescribed application form. A written
Admission Test is conducted for the applicants. Then a viva voce examination is conducted for the
selected candidates. Selections are made based on the combined score of marks in the written test,
viva voce examination, previous academic results and experience. The name of the degree is Master of
International Trade and Business.
Academic Year and Semester
The program arranges admission test for two intakes in an academic year, which coincides with the
calendar year. Classes are taken in two semesters as under:
Program Duration and Course Distribution
Master of International Trade and Business is a 2-year program. This is a 51 credit hour program
including 48 credit hours comprising 16 courses (each course weighted 3 credit hours) and Term
Paper/ Project Paper accounted for 3 credit hours. A student can take minimum 2 courses and
maximum 4 courses in each semester.
Degree Requirement
For the MITB degree, each student is required to
I. Complete 51 credit hours
II. Earn a minimum CGPA of 2.50; and
III. Complete the program in maximum of six consecutive academic years including the
year of first admission into the program.
Students with F grade in any course are not awarded the degree.
A student earning B or below B grade in any course in any semester can improve the grade by retaking
the course in subsequent available semesters. If a student fails to improve his/her grade, his/her
previous grade will prevail. A student is allowed to retake a course only once. Only prerequisite courses
are subject to waiver decisions. Considering the background of the individual student, total waiver on
the courses is determined by the MITB program committee.
Course Teachers
• Professors and Associate Professors will take classes in the MITB program. Teachers
having experience in relevant field will be given preference and in case of non-availability
of Professor/Associate Professor, Assistant Professor having Ph.D/foreign master
degree/professional degree in relevant field may be allowed to take a class.
• Resource persons having experience in relevant field can be hired from outside for any
specific course.
• Course teachers are evaluated by a teachers’ evaluation system of the program committee.
Partnership
To enhance its linkage with industry and professional bodies and houses operating in the areas of
international trade and business, the program has the provision for establishing academic collaboration
with them and enriching training of professionals for relevant fields.
Evaluation of MITB Students
Performance of students in courses is evaluated through tests, term papers, class attendance and class
performance, quizzes, term paper presentations and final examinations with weights for them as under:
Class attendance required is 75% of the total number of classes held in a course.
The examination of scripts is be done by the course teacher. The total examination process is
administered by the committee that administers the program as a whole. Although the examination
scripts are evaluated by assigning marks, the results are published by assigning letter grades. With
these letter grades a CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is also published in the result sheet. For
each course (i) marks of the semester final examinations plus (ii) sub-total of the marks of the in-course
tests, class attendance & participation, quiz, term paper and presentation are totaled and the total
marks are converted into letter grades.
