RESEARCH AREAS OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Public Health at the University of Dhaka is committed to advancing knowledge through multidisciplinary, policy-relevant, and community-engaged research. Our research agenda reflects national priorities, global public health concerns, and the diverse expertise of our faculty members. The Department prioritizes evidence-based inquiry that contributes to improving population health, reducing health inequalities, and strengthening health systems in Bangladesh and beyond.
Our major research areas include:
- Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance
Research on infectious and noncommunicable diseases, outbreak investigation, disease burden assessment, and epidemiologic modeling.
- Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (MNCAH)
Studies focusing on reproductive health, maternal and neonatal outcomes, child nutrition, early childhood development, adolescent SRHR, and family planning.
- Health Systems and Policy Research
Research on health governance, health financing, public health policy, health workforce, service delivery models, and Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
- Environmental and Climate Change–Related Health
Investigations into climate-sensitive diseases, environmental risk exposure, water and sanitation, pollution, disasters, and climate adaptation strategies.
- Nutrition and Food Security
Research addressing malnutrition, dietary behaviors, micronutrient deficiencies, food security, and nutrition-sensitive interventions.
- Gender, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)
Studies on gender norms, reproductive health rights, GBV, socio-cultural determinants, and equity-focused interventions.
- Occupational and Workplace Health
Research on workplace hazards, occupational illnesses, industrial safety, and health risks among formal and informal sector workers.
- Aging, Chronic Diseases, and Social Determinants of Health
Studies on elderly care, chronic disease management, mental health, disability, and social determinants influencing health outcomes.
- Migration and Urban Health
Research on internal and international migration, refugee health, urbanization, slum environments, and health vulnerabilities.
- Health Communication and Behavioral Science
Research on health literacy, behavior change communication (BCC), digital health communication, community engagement, and risk communication.
- Community-Based Public Health Interventions
Development, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs at local and national levels.
The Department encourages interdisciplinary collaborations with national ministries, NGOs, international organizations, academic institutions, and community partners to ensure that research findings meaningfully inform public policy and public health practice.
