Welcome to International Centre for Ocean Governance

International Centre for Ocean Governance (ICOG) is established as a cooperative research centre by the joint initiative of Department of Oceanography at the University of Dhaka and School of Law, University of Western Sydney, Australia on 27th March 2017

ICOG is the first research centre of its kind in Bangladesh. It can play a crucial role to achieve on the ground change, securing protection for the Bay of Bengal environment and the economic and social sustainability of all actors in the region. It can use its resources to build and enhance resource capacity of the Government of Bangladesh to govern and manage the activities in marine and coastal areas by providing new theoretical knowledge and practical experience on sustainable ocean governance to senior and mid-level career academics and government and non-government officials, researchers and students as well.

In order to acquire knowledge for conducting various economic activities and scientific research especially on Marine Spatial Planning and Ocean Governance in the Bay of Bengal, an international centre named as ‘International Centre for Ocean Governance’ has been established under the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences as the first institution in Bangladesh of its kind which has started its journey since 2016 (unofficially).

Intended scholars and participants of ICOG may include university academics, members of the law reform commission, interested Parliament Members, government officials from various Ministries, particularly from the Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Ministry of Forest and Environment, Ministry of Fisheries and Ministry of Agriculture; law enforcing agencies including Coast Guard, marine police, naval officers, judges, intended marine investors, coastal community representatives and environment activists. Research students of UWS and DU working on ocean and coastal management issues can be attached with ICOG as a visiting research fellow.
