Dr. Mohammad Mainul Islam is a professor and former Chairman of Population Sciences at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, with over 21 years of experience in population and development. He also taught as an Adjunct Faculty member at the Department of Sociology and the Department of Chinese Language and Culture (CLC) of the Institute of Modern Language (IML) of the University of Dhaka and the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development Studies (BIGD), BRAC University.

Dr. Islam got his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Sociology from the University of Dhaka. He received his Ph.D. in Demography from the Institute of Population Research at Peking University, China, specializing in Population Health. Before that, Professor Islam completed the Chinese Language Program at the College of Advanced Chinese Training of Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU). He completed a Global Health Research Capacity Strengthening Program (GHR-CAPS) Postdoctoral Fellowship at McGill University, Canada, between 2013 and 2014. Dr. Islam also received training at various reputed universities, such as Johns Hopkins Fall Institute in Barcelona, Stanford University, Brown University, and the University of Bergen.

Professor Islam received the First Prize of Academic Excellence Award 2008 from Peking University, China. Later, he was named the Nick Simons Scholar of the New Investigator in Global Health program of the Global Health Council, Washington, DC, USA 2010. He is a two-time New Voices in Global Health program winner, receiving these accolades in 2014 and 2016 at the World Health Summit in Berlin, Germany. He has presented his research at hundreds of international and academic conferences at home and abroad as a keynote plenary and invited speakers at various international and national scientific meetings. As an invited panelist, Dr. Islam attended the Expert Group Meeting on Monitoring Implementation of the Asian and Pacific Ministerial Declaration on Population and Development, UNCC, Bangkok, Thailand, 23-24 September 2019, and the 56th session of the UN Commission on Population and Development in the EXPERT PANEL ON THE PROGRAMME OF WORK IN POPULATION dated 13 April 2023. Professor Islam represented the Government of Bangladesh as a Delegation Member at the Midterm Review of the Asian and Pacific Ministerial Declaration on Population and Development, ESCAP, Bangkok, November 26-28, 2018; the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25: Accelerating the Promise, November 12-14, 2019 in Nairobi, Republic of Kenya.

Dr. Islam has contributed to over 75 peer-reviewed publications, including publications of research findings to the first author in The Lancet, Lancet Global Health, Lancet Regional Health- Western Pacific, Journal of Global Health, Journal of Population and Social Research, PLOS ONE, BMC Women's Health. Recently, he was selected as the chief editor of the International Journal for South-South Cooperation in Population and Development.

Professor Islam has professional involvement in various associations, including the International Union of Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), Asian Population Association (APA), Population Association of America (PAA), International Society of Global Health (ISoGH), International Sociological Association (ISA), etc. He has 100+ media outlets nationally and internationally. He is a regular contributor to the National Dailies and other electronic media. Dr. Islam works as a consultant for government and UN agencies. As a consultant of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Bangladesh, he drafted the first National Family Planning Strategy (2023-2030).

Professor Islam is a member of various national-level technical committees of the Planning Commission, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, etc. His work broadly focuses on population and development, population dynamics, population aging, reproductive health, global health, population and health policies, family planning, climate change, and displaced populations, including Rohingya, social demography, and China studies.
