“Artist Qayyum Chowdhury Memorial Gold Medal” has been introduced at the Faculty of Fine Art of Dhaka University (DU). Artist Tahera Khanam, wife of late artist Qayyum Chowdhury handed over a cheque for Tk. 10 lac to DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique today, February 19, 2017 at the VC’s office to introduce this gold medal.

Dean of the Faculty of Fine Art of DU Prof. Nisar Hossain, Chairman of the Department of Graphic Design Md. Maksudur Rahman, Chairman of the Department of Printmaking Md. Anisuzzaman, Chairman of the Department of Oriental Art         Dr. Malay Bala, Chairman of the Department of Craft Md. Faruk Ahamad Mullah,  Chairperson of the Department of Art History Sabrina Shahnaz, donor’s son and Associate Prof. of DU Computer Science & Engineering Department Dr. Moinul Islam Zaber, daughter-in-law and Associate Prof. of DU History Department Mrittika Shahita and Acting Registrar Md. Enamuzzaman were present, among others, on this occasion.

Out of the income of this donation, every year one meritorious student who will secure the highest CGPA in BFA Honors final examinations among the eight departments under the Faculty of Fine Art of DU will be awarded “Artist Qayyum Chowdhury Memorial Gold Medal”.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr.  AAMS Arefin Siddique thanked the donor for her donation. He hoped that the students would be highly benefited and encouraged from this donation. The VC recalled the outstanding contribution of renowned artist Qayyum Chowdhury to promote art and culture in the country. He also paid glowing tribute to the memory of late artist.

It may be mentioned that artist Qayyum Chowdhury, also a former Professor of the Faculty of Fine Art of DU was born on March 9, 1932 and died on November 30, 2014.  He was awarded Independence Day Award and Ekushey Padak for his outstanding contribution in art and culture.
