Bangladesh stands at a pivotal moment in its development, and the University of Dhaka has a responsibility to be at the heart of that journey. Research is how we fulfill that responsibility.

Our faculty and researchers are doing work that matters. From designing renewable energy systems for off-grid rural communities to developing climate-resilient crop varieties for farmers facing unpredictable monsoons, their efforts are grounded in the realities of Bangladeshi life. Public health, digital enterprise, and industrial innovation are equally active areas — not boxes to tick, but issues shaping our country’s future.

None of this happens in isolation. We work closely with government ministries, private industry, and international partners to ensure that what we discover in our labs and classrooms finds its way into policy, into practice, and into people’s lives. Precision farming is helping smallholders grow more with less. Smart city research is informing how our urban centers develop. These are not abstract ambitions — they are projects already underway.

We are also investing in the next generation. A stronger research culture on campus means students are not simply learning received knowledge — they are questioning it, testing it, and building on it. We want our graduates to leave here ready to start things, not just join them.

We believe that good policy begins with honest evidence, and the University has a role to play in providing that. Economic development that leaves communities behind or degrades the environment is not progress — and our research reflects that conviction.

I am genuinely grateful to the researchers, collaborators, and partners who bring this work to life every day. Their commitment is what gives these words meaning.
