On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2026, a special art exhibition titled “Art for Equality” was held on 8 March 2026 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka. The exhibition was jointly organized by the Department of Art History, Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka, and the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.
The exhibition was inaugurated by the Honorable President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Mohammed Shahabuddin. Distinguished guests present at the event included Dr. Zubaida Rahman and Barrister Zaima Rahman.
The exhibition was curated by Professor Dr. Shake Manir Uddin of the Department of Art History, University of Dhaka, with Sanjoy Kumar Dey, also a faculty member of the same department, serving as co-curator.
The “Art for Equality” exhibition featured artworks created during the “Art for Equality” workshop held on 14 and 15 November 2025. This workshop was organized by the Department of Art History, University of Dhaka, in collaboration with Plan International Bangladesh, JAAGO Foundation Trust, and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bangladesh. Participants included faculty members and students from nine public and private universities in Bangladesh, as well as young members from related organizations.
The exhibited artworks artistically and symbolically represented the lived realities of marginalized and underprivileged women in society, experiences of discrimination and violence against women, as well as themes of struggle, aspiration, and the pursuit of gender equality. Through the perspectives of emerging artists, this multifaceted exploration of social reality extended art beyond mere aesthetic expression, transforming it into a broader platform engaging with equality, justice, and human dignity.
During the event, curator Professor Dr. Shake Manir Uddin and co-curator Sanjoy Kumar Dey emphasized the importance of the creative vision and aesthetic sensibilities of visual and craft artists in the development and social progress of Bangladesh. It was particularly highlighted that a significant portion of Bangladesh’s creative professionals are women, whose artistic practices not only express aesthetic values but also reflect social experiences, cultural contexts, and the multifaceted realities of life. The discussion underscored the vital role of the artistic community and creative professionals in the country’s social, cultural, and economic advancement, a perspective that was prominently reflected throughout the exhibition discourse.
