A meeting between Dhaka University (DU) and First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) of the Ministry of Natural Resources, China was held today June 02, 2026 at DU VC’s meeting room to strengthen ocean research in Bangladesh.  DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam presided over the meeting.

Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) of DU Prof. Dr. Abdus Salam, Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences Prof. Dr. Humayun Kabir and Director of the International Centre for Ocean Governance (ICOG) Dr. K M Azam Chowdhury, Deputy Director General of International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources, China Mr. Antao Wang, Senior Scientist of the First Institute of Oceanography Prof. Dr. Fangli Qiao, Director of International Cooperation Department of the First Institute of Oceanography Mr. Yafeng Yang, Prof. Changshui Xia, Prof. Dr. Shizhu Wang and Prof. Dr. Xin Shan participated in the meeting.

During the meeting they discussed the possibilities of signing a MoU between the Ministry of Natural Resources in China and concerned Ministry in Bangladesh to implement CIDCA project regarding early warning and prediction systems for marine disasters in Bangladesh.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam expressed his willingness to work with the First Institute of Oceanography of China to expand academic and research collaboration as well as create more learning opportunities for youth. He stressed the need for strengthening ongoing joint collaborative programs on ocean research between Dhaka University and First Institute of Oceanography, China.
