Vice-President of the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS), China Mr. Li Kaisheng paid a courtesy call on Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam today September 22, 2026 at VC’s meeting room of the university.

During the meeting they discussed the possibilities of expansion of academic and research collaboration between the two sides, with particular emphasis on faculty, researcher and student exchanges, joint research, Chinese language education and China-related studies.

Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam said that academic communication and cooperation between the University of Dhaka and various Chinese universities and research institutions have increased significantly in recent times. He stressed the need for institutionalization of these growing relations further and make them more effective and sustainable.

Referring to his recent visits to China, the Vice-Chancellor said that there was considerable scope for expanding teachers, researchers and students exchanges programs among the universities and research institutions in Bangladesh and China. He said, such exchanges programs could contribute to sharing knowledge, research experience and academic expertise between the two countries.

The possibility of establishing a specialized centre at the University of Dhaka for Chinese language education and China-related studies was also discussed at the meeting. Participants observed that such a centre could serve as a platform for Chinese language learning, research on China, academic exchange and greater mutual understanding between the peoples of Bangladesh and China.

Vice President of the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies Li Kaisheng expressed his institution’s interest in further strengthening academic relations with the University of Dhaka. He said that the longstanding friendly relations between Bangladesh and China provide a strong foundation for expanding cooperation in higher education, research, knowledge and experience sharing.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining regular academic exchanges and creating opportunities for scholars and students from both countries to interact and collaborate.

The meeting also discussed opportunities for joint research projects, exchanges of researchers and young academics, short- and long-term academic visits, Chinese language education, and the organization of joint seminars, workshops and other academic programmes.

The two sides further exchanged views on developing a coordinated plan for future cooperation, including identifying the infrastructure, space and other resources required to promote China-related studies at the University of Dhaka. The participants also discussed possible areas of collaboration that could be developed through greater institutional engagement between the two sides.

Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam said that the University of Dhaka is committed to expanding its international academic partnerships and creating new opportunities for cooperation with universities and research institutions around the world. He noted that collaboration with Chinese institutions could be further expanded in areas of mutual academic and research interest.

Provost of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall Professor Dr. Md. Raqibul Hoque, Lecturer at the Institute of Modern Languages Agha Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury, Director of the Centre for International Discourse Innovation Studies Dr. Juan Zheng and relevant officials were present at the meeting.
