Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan returned home recently after a six-day official visit in Japan. He visited Japan at the invitation of Ehime University. During the visit, the Vice-Chancellor attended a series of high-level meetings with the President of Ehime University, Prof. Dr. Nishina Hiroshige and other senior officials.
As part of the bilateral discussions both institutions reaffirmed their commitment for strengthening ongoing academic and research collaborations. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to further enhance this partnership.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan also signed a formal Collaborative Research Agreement (CRA) for the implementation of a joint research project titled “Implementing Water Quality Monitoring and Purification Technologies to Control Health Risks for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area.” The project will be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) with the University of Dhaka serving as the lead implementing institution. Prof. Dr. Anwar Hossain of DU Fisheries Department will serve as the Principal Investigator (PI) for the Bangladesh component. During his visit, the Vice-Chancellor visited several state-of-the-art laboratories and major research facilities at Ehime University, accompanied by Prof. Dr. Anwar Hossain.
As part of his itinerary, Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan also delivered a keynote speech at an international seminar in Tokyo, hosted by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, titled "Rohingya Refugee Crisis: Regional Security Risks, Pathways to Repatriation, and Livelihood Challenges." He also participated in a high-level meeting with the foundation's leadership to discuss future opportunities for joint research with the University of Dhaka.
Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor met with the Director of Research at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) where they discussed potential policy-oriented joint research initiatives and collaborations on climate-related policy development.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan remarked that the visit has opened new avenues for international research and academic cooperation for the University of Dhaka.
